Almaty sits at the foot of mountains that rise above 4,000 meters, and the weather on a trail can turn from warm sun to cold wind in the time it takes to drink a cup of tea. Packing well is the easiest way to enjoy the day.
Layers, not bulk
Bring a light base layer, a warm fleece and a wind and rain shell. In summer the city may be 30 degrees while the lakes above sit near 12.
Feet first
Broken-in hiking shoes with a good grip matter more than any other item. The paths to Kolsai and Big Almaty Lake can be muddy after rain.
Sun and water
At altitude the sun is strong even on cloudy days. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat, and carry at least 1.5 liters of water.
Small but useful
A power bank, some cash in tenge for village shops, and a copy of your passport. Our guides always carry a full first-aid kit, so you can travel light.
